H. Shafeequge, Male'
22 February 1975 - 12 September 1976
Mr. Ahmed Shafeeq took charge of the Atoll Leadership position on March 18, 1975.
During Ahmed Shafeeq's tenure, the most significant challenge was the extremely poor financial condition of the atoll. Following the dissolution of the Atoll Committee on May 14, 1975, there were major difficulties in paying staff salaries. To address this issue, significant changes had to be made to the administrative structure. Accordingly, on June 18, 1975, the area chiefs were removed from their positions, and their work was transferred to the office's peon.
Among the steps taken to economically develop the island, he reduced the previous 25 trees of land revenue for mosque imams and instead arranged to pay 100 cash per month. However, due to difficulties in receiving cash, the mosques reached a point where call to prayer and lighting were halted. As a result, some imams had to leave their work, and leaders from the island had to be sent to establish prayer.
To resolve the mosque issues, efforts were made to establish prayer by sending leaders from the island. Though money was first given for lighting, when that was unsuccessful, three kerosene oil bottles per month were given to each mosque. A permanent solution came when monthly salaries of 15 rufiyaa were started for the imams.
Ahmed Shafeeq's leadership was a period marked by significant public dissatisfaction. Some incidents in the island led to some people from Doodhi Gamu area being punished and sent to jail, which increased public unrest. For such various reasons, the government instructed Shafeeq to go to Male. Ahmed Shafeeq was officially removed from his position on September 12, 1976.
