It has come to the attention of this Council that some employees working at WAMCO and Fenaka branches in Fuvahmulah City are being terminated from their jobs in a collective manner. Terminating employees in this manner closes off avenues for earning income, and it will create significant hardships for the economic and social welfare of these employees and their families, which is why this Council views such actions with utmost disapproval and strongly condemns them.

While companies are carrying out such measures under the guise of "right sizing", it has been observed that employees are being terminated without regard to the quality and standards of their work, and either because they do not align with certain political ideologies or because they do not support particular views.

This is seen to contradict the promises made to protect job security and the government's principles of providing equal opportunities for employment with justice and fairness.

On one hand, ordinary employees are being terminated from their jobs, while on the other hand, notices of increasing political and ministerial positions are appearing among the public. In these economically difficult times, instead of ensuring job security, terminating ordinary employees' jobs for political reasons directly affects the rights of certain groups.

In the meetings held by this Council with WEMCO and Fenaka this month, after both companies assured that the work on projects currently underway in Fuvahmulah City would continue uninterrupted, the termination of employees in connection with project suspension appears to this Council to be inconsistent with the government's stated position.

Therefore, in this critical situation, to protect the rights of families facing hardship, to establish justice and equality in the workplace, this Council urges all relevant institutions and commissions to take immediate action, to ensure that the affected citizens receive justice, and to rehire those who have been unjustly terminated from their jobs.
